Xbox Live - Online Gaming On The Xbox 360

Whether you are a casual gamer, someone who has barely picked up the controller, or someone who spends more hours a week on your Xbox than you do with people in the real world, you should know about Xbox live.

Xbox live is basically the internet for video games. You are able to log online while playing a specific title and then you can access options which are otherwise unavailable for the game. Whether the content is exclusive in game features, the ability to work with (or against) other users, or even just to download new maps, equipment, and general game updates, the fact is you can upgrade your gaming experience simply by connecting to the internet and Xbox live.

Using Xbox live is fairly simple, and while it may be hard or confusing to establish an initial connection, once your Xbox 360 is hooked up and ready for internet play you should not have to go through any connection pains again.

It is also a good idea to make sure you have the correct accompanying items in order to make the game itself enjoyable online. Some games are best suited for use if you also have a headset so that you may speak with other games while online. Other games may require a lot download and upload capabilities to perform at the best possibilities of gameplay. If you do not have a fast enough internet connection, you may experience what many users refer to as "lag" (where the game itself is still playing and ongoing, but your internet does not allow you to process it quickly enough to keep up with the gameplay).

Once you have everything ready to go, you will only need to download some simple updates and software and some sort of subscription to the system. Don't worry; it's not all about more money. You have options when it comes to which subscription you would like to sign up for. The Xbox Live Silver package allows users to download new titles and demos, play classic arcade games and chat with friends. The Xbox Live Gold package is the one that allows you to access everything that the Silver package already has, but it also allows you to play the multiplayer games against or with your friends and other users.

Prices for the Silver subscription are nothing, because the Silver subscription is entirely free. In fact, Microsoft should probably be paying you to log on and download their new demos because they know it should lead to more game buying from the users. Unfortunately, if you want to fully experience the Xbox gameplay online, you will have to spring for the Gold subscription. The good news is that you can usually get it for only a few dollars a month, but the bad news is you are still paying money to play a game that you paid for on a system that you paid for and are doing it by logging onto the internet (which you still pay for). If you are serious about gaming, however, the Gold membership is at least worth a try, and there are some methods that will allow you to get a free month trial when you sign up.
